“Malpha bits” are another name for Forstner bits, particularly in the Kenyan context. Forstner bits are specialized woodworking drill bits designed to create flat-bottomed, clean, and precise holes, often used for:

• Drilling partial (blind) holes: Like for concealed hinges (which are also sometimes referred to as “Malpha hinges” in Kenya, hinting at the connection) or mortises.
• Drilling overlapping holes: For creating larger openings or intricate shapes.
• Drilling angled holes: Due to their unique design, they can start a hole on an angled surface.
• Cutting clean, splinter-free holes: Especially important in visible woodworking projects.

Key Features of Forstner Bits (Malpha Bits):

• Flat Bottom Hole: Unlike twist drills, which leave a conical bottom, Forstner bits produce a perfectly flat and clean bottom in the hole.
• Peripheral Cutting Edge: They have a continuous rim or spurs that score the circumference of the hole before the main cutting edge removes the material from the center. This prevents splintering.
• Center Point: A small spur in the center helps to guide the bit and keep it on target.
• Material: Typically made from high-carbon steel, alloy steel, or high-speed steel (HSS). Some higher-quality ones may have carbide tips (TCT – Tungsten Carbide Tipped) for increased durability and cutting ability in harder woods.
• Sizes: Available in a wide range of diameters. Common sizes for furniture and cabinetry are 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm, and 35mm (the 35mm bit is especially common for concealed cabinet hinges).
