Ratchet Die stock ½ to 1¼

Original price was: KSh8,000.00.Current price is: KSh6,550.00.

Ratchet Handle: This is the main body of the tool. It has a ratcheting mechanism that allows the user to turn the die heads in one direction without having to remove and reposition the handle. This is especially useful for working in tight spaces.

Die Heads: These are the most critical parts of the set. They are interchangeable heads, each with a specific size (½”, ¾”, 1″, and 1¼”). The die heads contain the “chasers” or cutters that actually cut the threads into the pipe. They are usually made of hardened alloy steel for durability.

Steel Handles: The ratchet handle often comes with one or two long tubular steel handles that screw into the head. These provide the necessary leverage to apply torque for cutting the threads.

Carrying Case: The entire set is typically packed in a durable plastic or metal case for easy storage and transport, and to protect the delicate die heads.

Description

A ratchet die stock, also known as a pipe threader or a manual pipe threading kit, is a specialized plumbing tool used to cut external threads onto the end of a metal pipe. The set you mentioned, covering sizes from ½” to 1¼”, is a very common size for general plumbing and pipefitting work.

Components of the Set

A typical ratchet die stock set with a ½” to 1¼” range includes:

  • Ratchet Handle: This is the main body of the tool. It has a ratcheting mechanism that allows the user to turn the die heads in one direction without having to remove and reposition the handle. This is especially useful for working in tight spaces.
  • Die Heads: These are the most critical parts of the set. They are interchangeable heads, each with a specific size (½”, ¾”, 1″, and 1¼”). The die heads contain the “chasers” or cutters that actually cut the threads into the pipe. They are usually made of hardened alloy steel for durability.
  • Steel Handles: The ratchet handle often comes with one or two long tubular steel handles that screw into the head. These provide the necessary leverage to apply torque for cutting the threads.
  • Carrying Case: The entire set is typically packed in a durable plastic or metal case for easy storage and transport, and to protect the delicate die heads.

How to Use the Tool

  1. Preparation: Secure the pipe in a vise to prevent it from rotating. Ensure the end of the pipe is cut square and is free of burrs.
  2. Select the Die Head: Choose the die head that matches the size of the pipe you are threading. For example, if you are threading a 1″ pipe, select the 1″ die head.
  3. Assemble the Tool: Insert the die head into the ratchet handle and secure it. Attach the tubular handle(s) to the ratchet head.
  4. Start Threading: Place the die head over the end of the pipe. Apply firm, steady pressure and begin rotating the handle in the cutting direction (usually clockwise).
  5. Lubrication: This is a crucial step. As you cut the threads, continuously apply a suitable cutting oil to the pipe and the die. This lubrication reduces friction and heat, which prevents damage to the die cutters, extends their lifespan, and results in a cleaner, smoother thread.
